A lovely example of the first year of the Liberty ten dollar coin with IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Rich reddish-gold color shows on both sides, perhaps a bit deeper on the reverse. Fairly well struck and nearly mark-free. The mintage of the 1866-S ten dollar Without Motto is listed in the Guide Book as 8,500 pieces, in comparison to 11,500 pieces for the With Motto variety as here. Actually, the precise mintage figures are not known, but this is an estimate based upon production runs. Both varieties are now very elusive. NGC Census: 8 in 53, 10 finer (8/08).
