A very pleasing example of the 1848-O eagle, this coin is lightly patinated, retains significant traces of luster, and is a pleasing green-golden color. In 1848, prior to the advent of the double eagle (1850), the $10 gold coin was the workhorse in large domestic transactions as well as international trade. Most all that were shipped overseas were melted at the destination, per the policy of foreign governments. Today in 2008, eagles from the 1840s are generally scarce, except for a few scattered dates. When 1848 New Orleans coins are seen, they are not often as nice as this.
